Welcome to Jennifer Mason Photography
Hi, I’m glad you stopped by my page; I am a Denver, Colorado birth photographer. Here you will find birth stories created with an artistic eye in a photo-journalistic style. I truly love what I do and my clients end up being friends. Take some time to see their stories and watch their birth videos and you will see why birth photography is such a passion of mine. While you watch, you will see families grow and transform right in front of your eyes.
There is just something about a homebirth that makes me giddy. Going into a home that is about to welcome a brand new life is amazing. Everyone seems comfortable in their space, the mom is laboring comfortably, the other siblings are excited (or sleeping) and there is an electric vibe in the air. It’s part of what makes birth photography amazing, capturing that vibe and the moments caught within it. This family welcomed baby girl #2 at home a few years earlier and now were welcoming baby #3 at home too. The gender was a surprise.
When I met Anne, I was excited to see her birthing space. A gorgeous bathroom with a giant bathtub, and she wanted to be surrounded by family, including her mother and oldest daughter who were going to catch baby. Her mother flew in a few days prior to be with the family during this time, and it was fitting that gramma opened the front door when I rang the bell on that late in the evening in October. She smiled at me, welcomed me and pointed me up the stairs to the bedroom where Anne was laboring in total darkness. Completely in her zone.

Welcomed by loving parents and two older sisters, baby Juno was born October 25th, late in the evening, under the crescent moon. […]
Erika and Jesse met me when Erika was 7 months pregnant, we planned a beautiful maternity shoot in Golden, Colorado which you can find here. They planned on giving birth to their first child at our local birth center, Mountain Midwifery Center, but plans changed and Erika ended up delivering at North Suburban Medical Center in Thornton, Colorado. Even though her plans changed, her birth photography story was just as beautiful.
I got a message around 6:30am to say that Erika’s water had broken, but no contractions yet, they were going to head to the birth center in a few hours for medication. They had travel there every 4 hours throughout the day for meds, but each time mom was not progressed far enough to stay. At their 5pm check, I thought surely they would end up staying at the birth center, but that didn’t happen and they headed home again. Unfortunately, it was rush hour and they were stuck in their car for a long time, as Erika’s contractions continued to progress and become more intense. After going through transition in the car and some at home, Jesse called to tell me that Erika wanted to go to the hospital and get an epidural. Contractions in the car are NO fun, so they drove to the nearest hospital to them, North Suburban. When they arrived, Erika was dilated to 7cm and shortly after that, dilated to 9cm.
When I got the call that they were heading to the hospital, I headed out the door myself. Erika had just had an epidural and was feeling much better, but still feeling some pain with contractions. Their family was all eagerly waiting out in the waiting room for baby to arrive, and shortly after I got there, Erika’s doula arrived too. Julie from Expecting Greatness jumped right in and made sure Erika was comfortable and supported. She labored and rested until it was time to push, then she was able to deliver Sidney out in just a few short minutes of pushing.

When I met Anne, I liked her right away and was thrilled when she asked me to take photos for the birth of their 3rd child. They were having baby #3 at their home in the Highlands, with an amazing midwife, Jen Tarver Anderson from New Leaf Midwifery.
Anne chose a lifestyle maternity session in their home, a place they are comfortable in and they cherish. We started taking pictures of the girls getting ready in the bathroom that she planned on giving birth to baby #3 in, and had her second daughter in as well. Then we were off to the kitchen for some cookie baking!
I love lifestyle photoshoots because you can truly capture the family dynamic, and its clear that this family dynamic is full of lots of fun and joy.
Take a few minutes to check out some of my favorite photos from this lifestyle session, its one of my favorites.
When I was contacted by Michelle to shoot a birth in Colorado Springs at St. Frances Medical Center, I was pretty excited to share in their birthing day. Michelle and Ashley waited a long time before having kids and they were very in love and full of love to share. I immediately liked both of them and it was easy to capture their love on camera. As their due date came closer, we kept in touch and after going past her due date a few days, the doctor decided it was time to induce Michelle. She arrived at the hospital the night before the induction and was monitored through the night, she was already having contractions. They called me to come the following morning, when her water was to be broken. I drove down to Colorado Springs and pulled up when I got a text that she had gone from 3cm to 7cm to 9cm very quickly and she was going to start pushing. I ran upstairs and spent some time with Michelle and Ashley as they worked together to get baby Greyson out.
After pushing for a short time, the doctor said that the baby was too big, and stuck, so they opted for a c-section. I was unable to photograph inside the operating room, but gave my camera to dad, who was able to get some great shots. His grandparents were waiting for him as well, and they got to meet their very first grandchild that day. It was an emotional meeting and one that warms my heart to think about, I am so glad that I got to share those moments with them. It was truly wonderful. Take a minute to check out the rest of baby Greyson’s birthing day story; even though his birth didn’t go as planned, he is a very loved little baby already.
