Home Birth in Detroit

Emily reached out to me about birth photography just a few months before her due date. From the moment that I talked to Emily on the phone, I knew that we’d enjoy working together. I was beyond thrilled when she asked me to photograph her maternity, birth and postpartum journey. {You can see her maternity session here. }

When I stepped into her home for her maternity session, I instantly felt grounded. From the colorful rugs,and plants to the art and tapestries on the wall - it’s not only a beautiful home, but very comfortable too. Not only is her space warm and inviting, but so is Emily. I knew the birth would be a special one. She had chosen Detroit Midwife, Heather Robinson from Birth Beautiful Detroit. I attended another birth with Heather earlier in the year and loved her presence. It was the first birth in Michigan where I really felt at HOME again.

Emily’s had contractions and early labor signs for days, but her labor had not switched into active yet. I knew that it was just a matter of time and we would all rush to her birth space. I was ready and waiting when she called in the middle of the night. I grabbed my bag, kissed my kids goodbye and ran out the door. The drive is just under 1 hour at this time of night and I truly prefer to get the call at 3-4am instead of other times, because I love the wee morning hours and morning sunlight.

Once I arrived, she welcomed me into her space and I could tell this baby would be coming soon. Shortly after, her midwife arrived, and she got into the pool. Things picked up and she asked for her daughter to join them for the birth, as they had planned. Her daughter watched in amazement as her mom gave birth to her brother. She was the first to give her the biggest smile and I just loved their reactions to each other.

This birth story is just full of smiles and love and I’m so excited to share it with you!
